Old Town Alexandria offers some of the best sunset views along the Potomac River — but not every spot feels the same.

Some locations are quiet and open, while others sit closer to busier streets and foot traffic.

If you're looking for a calm place to watch the sunset — especially with a small dog — these are the spots that consistently work best.

Best Sunset Spots in Old Town Alexandria (Quick Guide)

  • Quietest: Jones Point Park

  • Most Open Space: Daingerfield Island

  • Best Quick Stop: Tide Lock Park

  • Best Elevated View: George Washington Masonic Memorial

Jones Point Park

Best For: Quiet waterfront views and space to spread out
Vibe: Calm, open, slightly removed from Old Town
Good for Small Dogs: Yes — more space, fewer tight walkways
Foot Traffic: Low to moderate
Watch For: Occasional bridge noise overhead

Jones Point Park sits just south of Old Town Alexandria beneath the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and offers one of the most peaceful waterfront sunset views in the area.

The park faces west across the Potomac River, allowing the evening light to stretch across the water as the sun drops behind the Virginia shoreline. From the river’s edge, the view opens wide across the water, and the historic Jones Point Lighthouse often appears beautifully framed against the sky as the light softens.

Jones Point also offers a surprising variety of terrain for a small waterfront park. A large open grassy field sits in the middle of the park, while many of the shoreline edges are more wooded, with small walking paths that wind through the trees and down toward the water. Near the lighthouse, the lawn opens directly to the river, creating one of the clearest sunset views in the park.

Across the Potomac, you can often see the lights of National Harbor, including the National Harbor Capital Wheel, which slowly lights up as evening approaches.

Despite sitting only minutes from the center of Old Town, Jones Point feels noticeably removed from the activity of the Alexandria waterfront. The park’s layout, with its separate parking area and tucked-away shoreline paths, creates a much quieter atmosphere than the busy streets and sidewalks closer to King Street.

That contrast becomes even more noticeable for small dogs, who often respond differently to busy sidewalks than quieter waterfront spaces.

You will occasionally hear traffic from the bridge overhead, but the wide river views, soft light, and slower pace of the park usually create a surprisingly peaceful setting at sunset.

Daingerfield Island

Best For: Wide open space and long, relaxed sunset walks
Vibe: Spacious, breezy, and active but not crowded
Good for Small Dogs: Yes — plenty of room to move and adjust pace
Foot Traffic: Moderate, spread out across the park
Watch For: Planes passing overhead as they approach the nearby airport

Just north of Old Town Alexandria, Daingerfield Island offers wide open views and one of the most spacious waterfront parks along the Potomac.

The park sits just south of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, so planes frequently pass overhead as they approach the runway. Watching the aircraft glide low across the sky becomes part of the atmosphere here, especially in the evening.

Daingerfield Island sits on a narrow peninsula, with water on both sides. On the Potomac-facing side, the shoreline looks out across the river toward the Arlington skyline, where the sun sets behind the buildings in the distance. The open water and wide sky give the evening light plenty of space to spread across the river.

On the opposite side of the peninsula, sailboats sit quietly in the marina, creating a completely different waterfront scene as the light fades across the masts.

Large grassy lawns stretch across much of the park, giving dogs plenty of space to move around and explore. Compared with the tighter streets and smaller green spaces closer to Old Town, Daingerfield Island often feels much more open.

During our visit, Archie and Sadie were far more interested in chasing geese across the grass than watching the sunset.

Because of its size and layout, the park scores especially high for spaciousness — one of the environmental factors considered in the Small Dog Comfort Index when evaluating how comfortable destinations feel for small dogs.

Tide Lock Park

Best For: A quick, quiet stop along the water
Vibe: Calm but lightly active due to trail traffic
Good for Small Dogs: Yes — best for short pauses rather than long stays
Foot Traffic: Light to moderate (mostly walkers and cyclists passing through)
Watch For: Bikes on the Mount Vernon Trail passing nearby

Tucked between Old Town and the Potomac shoreline, Tide Lock Park is one of the quieter sunset spots along the river.

The park sits directly along the Mount Vernon Trail, where walkers, runners, and cyclists pass by as the evening light fades. Despite the steady movement on the trail, the small grassy edge along the water creates a peaceful place to pause and watch the river.

From here, the view opens wide across the Potomac toward Washington, DC. As the sun drops, the skyline gradually lights up across the water. On clear evenings you can spot landmarks like the Washington Monument and the glowing dome of the United States Capitol in the distance.

This stretch of shoreline feels especially calm at twilight, when the water turns smooth and the city lights begin reflecting across the river.

It’s not a large park, but it’s an easy place to stop during a walk and watch the transition from sunset to evening along the Potomac.

George Washington Masonic Memorial

Best For: Elevated, wide skyline views at sunset
Vibe: Open, quiet, and slightly removed from the waterfront
Good for Small Dogs: Yes — open plaza space and fewer tight walkways
Foot Traffic: Low to moderate, depending on time of day
Watch For: Long staircase and open exposure (less enclosed feeling)

The steps of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial sit high above Old Town and offer one of the widest sunset views anywhere in Alexandria.

From the top of the hill, the view opens dramatically across the neighborhoods below. The view is so wide from this spot that it can feel almost a little dizzying at first — streets, rooftops, and buildings stretching out across the horizon.

On clear evenings, the view even reaches toward Washington, DC in the distance. What makes this perspective unusual is that you’re looking over the city rather than from within it. In most parts of Old Town, buildings and trees frame your view, but from the memorial the skyline opens wide above the rooftops.

The wide stone steps and open plaza around the memorial also make it an easy place to pause for a few minutes and watch the sky change. There’s plenty of space to wander a little while the sunset colors move across the horizon.

As evening settles in, the memorial itself becomes part of the scene. The columns and tower gradually illuminate against the fading sky, and the building begins to glow above the long staircase. Sunset Views Across Old Town Alexandria

One thing that surprises many people about Old Town Alexandria is how much sky you can see once the sun begins to set.

Along the waterfront, the Potomac opens wide and the light spreads across the river. But in other parts of the city — especially from slightly higher streets and rooftops — the view shifts. Instead of water, you’re looking out across the neighborhood itself.

Rooftops, trees, church towers, and the George Washington Masonic Memorial begin to stand out against the changing sky.

From certain vantage points, the memorial rises clearly above the skyline. As the light fades, the tower slowly becomes one of the brightest points in the distance, visible from blocks away.

Some evenings the sky turns soft shades of pink and blue. Other nights, long bands of clouds catch deep orange light that stretches across the horizon.

It’s a quieter way to experience sunset — not just one view, but how the neighborhood changes as evening sets in.

Each of these locations offers a slightly different way to experience sunset in Alexandria.

Choosing the Right Sunset Spot With a Small Dog

If you're deciding where to go, start with how much space and quiet your dog needs.

For calmer, more open environments, Jones Point Park and Daingerfield Island tend to feel the most relaxed. For a shorter stop closer to town, Tide Lock Park works well. And for a wide, elevated view, the Masonic Memorial offers a completely different perspective.

Sunset in Alexandria isn’t just one view — it’s choosing the setting that feels right for the kind of evening you want.
