What to Do With Your Dog in Old Town Alexandria (That Isn't Just Walking)
Browsing King Street with dogs often becomes part of the outing itself.
A lot of dog-friendly guides to Old Town Alexandria focus on walks.
Walking is a big part of the experience here. The waterfront, historic streets, parks, and trails are some of the reasons people enjoy spending time in Old Town with their dogs.
But not every day with the dogs revolves around a long walk.
Some days we spend hours wandering Old Town. Other days the outing looks completely different. We grab coffee, browse a few shops, sit outside for lunch, stop for a treat, or attend a dog-friendly event.
One of the things that makes Old Town work so well with dogs is that there are plenty of ways to spend time together that don't center around walking.
Whether you're visiting for the afternoon or looking for ideas beyond another waterfront loop, Old Town offers coffee shops, patios, galleries, shopping, treats, and seasonal events that make it easy to spend an entire day with your dog.
Here are some of my favorite things to do with dogs in Old Town Alexandria beyond walking. Most of these can easily be combined into a half-day or full-day outing.
Grab Coffee and Stay Awhile
Archie watches the sidewalk activity while Saydie settles into a shady spot outside Turkish Coffee Lady in Old Town Alexandria.
Grab Coffee and Stay Awhile
Coffee stops are often part of our outings in Old Town, especially when we're not planning a long walk. Sometimes we grab a drink before heading toward the waterfront. Other times we settle in for a while, watch the neighborhood activity, and let the dogs enjoy being part of the day.
Misha's Coffee (Prince Street)
Misha's is one of the easiest coffee stops to work into a day with dogs. Located just a few blocks from the waterfront, it's a convenient place to start an outing before exploring King Street. The outdoor seating and steady flow of people make it a great spot for people-watching while enjoying a coffee.
ESP Tea & Coffee
Located right in the heart of King Street, ESP is an easy stop while browsing shops or exploring downtown. Their matcha is one of my favorites, whether served hot or iced, and the cozy, creative atmosphere makes it a place I enjoy lingering rather than simply grabbing a drink and moving on.
HYPERGOAT Coffee Roasters
HYPERGOAT feels a little removed from the busiest tourist blocks while still being close to everything. The coffee is roasted in-house, and it's a comfortable place to slow down for a bit before continuing the day.
Turkish Coffee Lady
Traditional Turkish coffee and tea, along with baklava and other desserts, make this one of the more distinctive coffee stops in Old Town. The experience feels different from a typical café visit and is a fun change of pace when you're spending the day with your dog.
Cafe Du Soleil
Tucked along Jefferson Street, Cafe Du Soleil brings a relaxed French café atmosphere to Old Town. Crepes, pastries, coffee, and outdoor seating make it an easy place to linger over breakfast or lunch while spending time with your dog.
What makes Old Town's coffee scene especially enjoyable with dogs is how different each stop feels. Whether you're starting the morning with a coffee near the waterfront, lingering over a matcha on King Street, or settling in with Turkish coffee and baklava, it's easy to build part of the day around slowing down and spending time together.
Archie and Saydie wait patiently inside a dog-friendly Old Town shop while we browse.
Dog-Friendly Patios and Outdoor Dining
Some days lunch becomes the main event rather than a stop between activities. Old Town has no shortage of dog-friendly patios, and each one offers a slightly different experience depending on the kind of day you're having.
Virtue Feed & Grain
Virtue Feed & Grain combines a historic Old Town setting with one of the area's most dog-friendly patios. The outdoor seating can be busy, and the tables are often close together, but dogs are genuinely welcomed here. It's also one of the few places in Old Town with a dedicated dog menu, which helped make one visit especially memorable when Archie happily worked his way through a burger while watching everything happening around him.
BARCA Pier & Wine Bar
Few places in Old Town have a setting quite like BARCA. The outdoor seating extends directly over the Potomac River on a dock, creating a dining experience that feels completely different from the rest of the neighborhood. On a nice day, it's easy to enjoy the waterfront views and spend more time there than originally planned.
Hummingbird
Hummingbird's large outdoor patio gives it a very different feel from many of Old Town's smaller restaurant patios. The tables are spread out, there's plenty of open space, and views toward the waterfront add to the relaxed atmosphere. It's a good option when you're looking for a leisurely brunch or lunch and want a little more room to relax with your dog.
Many Old Town patios welcome dogs with water bowls and outdoor seating, making it easy to include them in a meal stop along the waterfront.
Lost Dog Cafe
Lost Dog Cafe's patio sits behind the restaurant along a shaded courtyard, creating a setting that feels removed from much of the activity happening around it. The secluded atmosphere makes it one of the easier places in Old Town to enjoy a relaxed lunch with your dog.
La Pluma
La Pluma's spacious patio sits just off King Street, making it a convenient place to step away from some of the activity without leaving the heart of Old Town. The relaxed atmosphere encourages people to stay awhile. It's not unusual to see dogs stretched out under the tables while their owners linger over a meal and conversation.
Murphy's Irish Pub
Murphy's puts you right in the middle of King Street activity. The outdoor seating offers excellent people-watching, and the restaurant frequently hosts seasonal dog-friendly events that bring together local dog owners and visitors alike. It can also be one of the busier and noisier patio experiences in Old Town, so it's often a better fit for dogs that are comfortable around crowds and activity.
Whether you're looking for waterfront views, a quieter setting, or the energy of King Street, it's easy to find a patio that fits both you and your dog.
Browse Dog-Friendly Shops Along King Street
Archie pauses outside a dog-friendly shop before heading in to investigate.
Shopping is another easy way to spend time in Old Town without feeling like every outing has to revolve around walking. Many of the independent shops along King Street welcome well-behaved dogs, making it possible to browse, explore, and take your time moving through the neighborhood together.
The Dog Park
The Dog Park is an easy stop for treats, toys, accessories, and other dog supplies. If you're exploring King Street with a dog, it's one of the most obvious places to add to the outing.
Le Vintage Wine Shop
Le Vintage is one of those memorable independent Old Town businesses that's fun to browse while exploring King Street with your dog.
Shop Made in Virginia
Shop Made in Virginia showcases products from local artists and makers across the state, making it a great place to find a uniquely Virginian souvenir.
Red Barn Mercantile
Red Barn Mercantile offers home décor, gifts, and seasonal displays that make it a classic Old Town browsing stop.
Crème de la Crème
Crème de la Crème has been part of Old Town's shopping scene for years and remains a fun place to browse clothing, gifts, and accessories.
Ms. Moxie's Moon Shop
Ms. Moxie's Moon Shop is one of the most distinctive stores in Old Town, filled with eclectic gifts and curiosities. Visiting dogs are often greeted with biscuits, which certainly helps its popularity.
J.McLaughlin
J.McLaughlin is a welcoming clothing boutique that makes an easy stop while exploring King Street with your dog.
Many Old Town businesses genuinely welcome dogs. Water bowls outside storefronts, treats offered by employees, and friendly greetings from shop owners are common. The result is that browsing shops feels less like an interruption to the outing and more like another part of spending the day together.
Many locally owned shops in Old Town welcome well-behaved dogs inside.
Visit the Torpedo Factory Art Center
The Torpedo Factory Art Center is one of my favorite places to bring the dogs when the weather gets hot. Located right on the waterfront, it offers something completely different from another outdoor walk while still feeling connected to the experience of exploring Old Town.
Archie pauses along Alexandria's waterfront near the Torpedo Factory Art Center, taking in the activity around the marina on a sunny afternoon.
Inside, you'll find three floors of working artist studios, galleries, and exhibition spaces. Many of the artists work right in their studios, so visitors can watch paintings, pottery, jewelry, photography, and other artwork being created throughout the day.
One of the things I appreciate most is how much space there is to move around. Wide hallways, multiple levels, and open sightlines make it easy to wander without feeling crowded. The dogs are able to explore at a relaxed pace while taking in all the new sights, sounds, and smells.
Saydie stops outside one of the Torpedo Factory's working artist studios while visitors browse galleries throughout the building.
The experience feels different every time we visit. Some days artists are actively working, while other days we spend more time browsing finished pieces and talking with studio owners. There is always something new to notice, which keeps the visit interesting even if you've been before.
For dogs, the variety can be surprisingly engaging. New flooring surfaces, different scents, changing artwork displays, and people moving through the building create plenty to observe without requiring a long walk in the summer heat.
Wide hallways, open galleries, and multiple levels make the Torpedo Factory Art Center an easy place to explore with dogs.
The Torpedo Factory is also one of the few places in Old Town where you can easily spend an hour or more indoors while still feeling like you're exploring rather than simply taking a break from the weather. On especially hot afternoons, it has become one of our favorite ways to continue the day without spending the entire time outside.
Stop for a Treat
Archie and Saydie quickly spotted the pup cup before I had a chance to set it down.
Pop's Old Fashioned Ice Cream
Pop's is a classic Old Town ice cream stop located just steps from the waterfront. Pup cups are available, making it an easy addition to an afternoon spent exploring King Street or relaxing by the river.
Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats
Goodies offers frozen custard instead of traditional ice cream and sits tucked near the waterfront. It's a fun stop on a warm day, with outdoor seating that makes it easy to enjoy a treat with your dog.
Casa Rosada Artisan Gelato
Casa Rosada serves artisan gelato and even offers dog gelato for four-legged visitors. The family-owned shop is known for its unique flavors and makes a great summer stop while spending time in Old Town.
After spending time along the waterfront, a frozen treat is an easy way to cool down before heading home or continuing your walk through Old Town. Whether you're in the mood for classic ice cream, frozen custard, or artisan gelato, all three stops are close enough to fit naturally into a waterfront afternoon.
The dogs are usually more interested in the pup cups or dog-friendly treats than the flavor choices, but these quick stops have become one of our favorite ways to end a warm-weather outing.
Attend a Dog-Friendly Event
Community dog events add a different energy to Old Town, bringing together local dogs, visitors, and businesses in one place.
Old Town's dog-friendly atmosphere extends beyond everyday walks and patio visits. Throughout the year, Alexandria hosts a variety of dog-focused events that bring local dog owners together.
ALX Dog Walk
The ALX Dog Walk has become one of Alexandria's signature dog events, bringing together local dog owners for a fun community gathering. It's a great opportunity to experience Old Town alongside other dog lovers while supporting local animal organizations.
Murphy's Pups on the Patio
Murphy's regularly hosts dog-friendly patio events that combine dining, socializing, and plenty of canine visitors. These gatherings are an easy way to meet other local dog owners while enjoying one of Old Town's most dog-friendly patios.
Alexandria's Event Calendar
Throughout the year, Alexandria hosts seasonal festivals, Yappy Hours, and other dog-friendly events that make it easy to find something new to do with your dog. Checking the local event calendar before a visit can uncover special activities happening during your stay.
The ALX Dog Walk brings together hundreds of dogs and their owners for one of Alexandria's most recognizable dog-friendly events.
Why Old Town Works So Well Beyond Walking
What makes Old Town enjoyable with dogs isn't just the walking.
It's the variety.
You can start with coffee, browse a few shops, spend time at the Torpedo Factory, enjoy lunch on a patio, stop for ice cream, and head home having barely thought about mileage at all.
If you're lucky enough to visit during events like ALX Dog Walk, a Yappy Hour, or one of Old Town's seasonal dog-friendly gatherings, they can make an already great day even more memorable.
Not every outing with dogs needs to revolve around covering ground.
Sometimes the best days are the ones where you spend a few hours together, move at a slower pace, and enjoy everything Old Town has to offer beyond the walk itself.
