From Coffee to Pup Cups: 6 Stops in Old Town Alexandria With Dogs

waterfront

Some of our favorite summer days in Old Town begin with no particular plan at all.

If you're looking for ideas for a dog-friendly summer day in Old Town Alexandria, these six stops combine coffee, waterfront views, lunch, shopping, and a pup cup at the end. Everything is within walking distance, making it easy to spend the day exploring together at whatever pace feels right.

Stop 1: Start With Coffee

One of my favorite parts of a summer day in Old Town is getting outside and enjoying the early morning quiet before the temperatures start to climb.

Before the sidewalks fill in and the day gets moving, the neighborhood feels a little different.

There is no shortage of good coffee shops in Old Town, and many welcome dogs. Old Town Alexandria offers plenty of dog-friendly places to explore, making it easy to spend an entire summer day together without leaving the neighborhood.

A few favorites include:

Misha's Coffee – A longtime local favorite with locations on Prince Street and King Street.

ESP Tea & Coffee – A cozy, independently owned café with local artwork on the walls and a laid-back neighborhood feel.

The Greenery – A cozy neighborhood café known for its creative coffee drinks, healthy baked goods, and relaxed atmosphere.

Turkish Coffee Lady – A distinctive Old Town café serving traditional Turkish coffee, tea, and pastries in a warm, inviting setting.

By the time we finish our coffee, the dogs have settled into the outing and the rest of Old Town is beginning to come alive.

Mornings in Old Town often start with coffee before the neighborhood begins to fill in.

.Stop 2: Follow the Waterfront

After coffee, we head toward the waterfront.

We often spend a good part of the morning along the waterfront. There is no rush to be anywhere. We move at whatever pace feels right, stopping when something catches our attention or when we find a bench with a good view of the river.

Archie is usually busy keeping track of the geese. He'll stand along the shoreline watching them drift past, completely absorbed in where they're going.

Some mornings we stay near Founders Park. Other days we continue farther along the waterfront depending on how everyone is feeling.

Stop 3: Explore the Torpedo Factory Art Center

By this point in the day, a stop inside the Torpedo Factory Art Center often feels like the perfect change of pace.

Stepping inside offers a welcome break from the sun without interrupting the flow of the day.

The dogs seem to enjoy the change as well. After spending the morning outside, the Torpedo Factory offers a different environment to explore. The stairs, large open spaces, and indoor setting provide a different kind of activity than the waterfront.

On especially hot days, this stop becomes even more valuable. Many of the same ideas appear in Things to Do in Alexandria in Hot Weather With Dogs.

Stop 4: Lunch on a Dog-Friendly Patio

By late morning or early afternoon, we're usually ready to sit down for lunch.

After a morning spent along the waterfront and exploring the Torpedo Factory, it feels good to slow down for a while. Lunch gives everyone a chance to recharge before continuing into the next part of the day.

One thing I like about this part of Old Town is that there are plenty of dog-friendly restaurants within a few blocks of the waterfront, making it easy to choose whatever sounds good that day.

A few favorites include:

• Vola's Dockside Grill

• Virtue Feed & Grain

• Barca Pier & Wine Bar

• Ada's on the River

The atmosphere is just as important as the food. These are all places where both dogs and owners can relax for a while before continuing the day.

Stop 5: Browse a Few Dog-Friendly Shops

After lunch, we usually make our way toward King Street.

This is often the most flexible part of the day. We might spend a few minutes in one shop, linger a little longer in another, or simply enjoy wandering through town.

If you're starting from the waterfront, the route naturally takes you past Market Square. Market Square remains one of the central gathering places in Old Town and is home to the country's oldest continuously operating farmers market, which takes place every Saturday morning.

If we're near Prince Street, we sometimes take a quick detour along Captain's Row, Alexandria's oldest cobblestone block, before continuing into town.

Places like Virginia Made, The Old Town Shop, Pacers Running, and other dog-friendly businesses make it easy to step inside for a few minutes while continuing to explore the neighborhood.

The dogs seem to enjoy this part of the day as much as we do. Over time, they've learned where some of the best treats are and even recognize a few of the people who work in the shops.

Stop 6: End With a Treat (If Everyone Is Still Up For It)

Some days the dogs are ready to head home.

Other days they seem convinced the outing isn't quite over yet.

If everyone still has a little energy left, we sometimes finish the day with a treat before calling it a day. By this point, the pace is slow, the outing is winding down, and everyone has already had a full day together.

A few favorite dog-friendly options include:

Pop's Old Fashion Ice Cream Co. – A classic Old Town ice cream shop just a short walk from the waterfront.

Casa Rosada Artisan Gelato – Small-batch gelato with creative seasonal flavors and a quieter neighborhood feel.

Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats – A longtime local favorite known for frozen custard, shakes, and generous portions.

Several of these spots also offer pup cups, making it easy for everyone to enjoy a small treat before heading home.

The treat is optional.

The time together is the part we remember.

Sometimes the perfect ending is as simple as a pup cup before heading home.

A Summer Day That Doesn't Feel Rushed

One of the things I appreciate most about Old Town is that a good day with dogs rarely requires a complicated plan.

A coffee stop, time along the waterfront, lunch, a little browsing, and maybe a treat at the end is often enough.

On summer days especially, keeping the schedule flexible usually works better than trying to fit in too much.

Many of the same ideas also appear in Why Familiar Walks Matter for Dogs, especially when the weather is hot and the days are long.

The dogs seem happier, the day feels less rushed, and we almost always end up enjoying ourselves more.
